When?

14-28 of June 2009. Attendees should arrive on Sunday the 14th (or before) for a 9:00 start on Monday morning. Accommodation organized by the workshop will be available from the 14th.

Where?

Artifexbalear Stonemasonry School. General Luque Street, 6. Inca. Mallorca. Balearic Isles. Spain.

+

The Cuartel General Luque is an old military compound. One of the barracks is being transformed into a Stonemasonry and substainable construction School. Do not expect to find elegant premises or nice furniture. It is a under construction project, where students learn and restore the building as part of their apprenticeship.

Why?

If you believe that design and ecology should reemerge as a natural partnership, a second nature, then the Artifexworkshop is where you should be. Artifex is a unique facility where you will receive hands-on training based on traditional Mediterranean masonry and sculptural practices in rare convergence with innovative, contemporary and ecological theory and design. We hope you come along!

How?

Palma Airport is one of the busiest of all Europe. You will find plenty of flight arrangements at internet (www.expedia.com, www.edreams.es or low cost air companies like airberlin, Vueling, Easyjet...)

How much?

The workshop fare is 400 euros. A limited number of beds are available at a rural stone house at the cost of another 350 euros. Once your application has be accepted a 200 € non-refundable deposit has to be sent to Artifexbalear in order to confirm your reservation for the workshop.

+

The rural house is at 8 km from the workshop site. B&B basis. Four bedded rooms to share. Simple, nice atmosphere and surroundings. See photos

+

From monday to friday a menu lunch will be offered to the atendees by the Inca local council.

Rest of meals are not included but for those staying at the house there's a kitchen for night / weekend meals.

Safety or mountain boots recommended. Safety equipment provided by organisation.

Mallorca?

Mallorca is world wide known as a sun&beach destination. Paradise sand beaches, busy nightlife, mountain, golf, cycling or scuba diving sports... Less known is that Mallorca has the most precise and careful dry stone retaining walls of the mediterránean, up to 17 meters high.

Palma has one of the biggest and well preserved medieval cities of all Europe, with stone gothic highlights like the Cathedral, with one of the hights european vaults, only after Collogne and Bauvais(42meters high stone vaults , supported by 21m high columns with just 1.50 diameter, or La Lonja, with its imposing vaults supported by 1/17 thickness/high ratio columns. The majorcan master masons worked at different mediterranean cathedrals ( Barcelona, Valencia, Gerona, Tarragona, Perpignan..) and the Castelnuovo of Naples.

Yes, Mallorca has something to offer in vaults and stone design, but also in stone and earth houses that can stand 300 years with a minimum maintenance. Want to learn more? = The Artifexworkshop
