( Miquel Ramis)
The seal of MIT pictures
the idea that brain and hand together are the support
of knowledge. It is written "mens et manus"
, at the fundation of the wisdom pillar that supports
arts and sciences, on which the flame of knowledge burns.
The concept mens, or mind, is represented
by a bearded wise man reading a book. Interestingly,
a blacksmith was chosen (we might have preferred
a mason) to depict manus, or hand.
This seal illustrates the constructivist
learning or active learning approach shared by
MIT- Cambridge and Artifexbalear: "learning
by doing"

pendiente.
Dry stone and earth/lime
mortars are efficient, centuries-old proven solutions.
Their recovery, beyond non-structural imitations—"skins
of stone"—is a pending issue in contemporary
architecture.

Paula meets Roman tools:
the Mallorcan "escarrana" is similar
to a hawk and holds the lime mortar to be taken
by the trowel . Not an easy exercise for a beginner
.
Lime mortars are safe, time-proven alternatives
to portland cement, compatible with the humans
that use them. Like us, they breathe, absorbing
or releasing humidity depending on weather conditions,
thus avoiding a buildup of condensation within
the walls.

Emily Lo and Florence
applying texture with the bush hammer. This tooth
hammer is related to the wooden mallet used by
housewives to soften meat. It gives a nice rustic
finishing to hard limestone. More importantly
, you learn the rhythms and cadences that stonework
demands. This is one of the first lessons to be
learned at the workshop.

expresiones ( enlosados, adoquinados, mosaicos
Stone pavements in
different forms (slabs, cobblestones, pebble mosaics,
teselae mosaics) have always had an important
presence in history, Their function is nowadays
basically taken by floor tiles or parquet, and
the opportunity to explore a universe of textures
and designs is lost .
Therefore, we selected
a pebble mosaic exercise within an aged limestone
stone frame. The requirements of modern fabrication
(modular, ergonomic work position ) are met and
the lost expressivity in contemporary design regained.

Some old treatises
describe the vaults as "fireproof roofs".
This reminds us that vaults were the ultimate
defence against the constant fires that periodically
slashed ancient cities.
The great fires of
Rome, London and Chicago are fixed in collective
memory and remind us of the need of cleverly use
arches and vaults as alternatives with obvious
advangages in terms of safety, energetic efficiency
and sustainability.

Experimentation is
a fertile medium for innovation. If innovation
is change that delivers a qualitative improvement,
then the limits of materials and techniques will
have to be pushed forward in order to learn from
them, even at the risk of failure .
Whether these experimental structures fail
or not isn't important. What is relevant are the
lessons gained in the debate, design and building
processes.
