Internship : Sustainable building, permaculture design, appropiate technology and project management/ 2018
12 week course combining hands-on building projects (earth and lime mortars, stonemasonry, dry stone ...) With low tech design , permaculture and project management.
The interns work in different projects learning practical skills, logistics and contextual information about how to coordinate projects of Sustainability, Permaculture and Appropiate Technology.
Language: English / Spanish.
Cost: 400 euros per month.

Artifex is a small Stonemasonry, Regenerative Agriculture and Permaculture design school in Mallorca, Spain. We
are based at Palma outskirts at an old manor house in need of restoration. Interns receive
tuition and theory and at the same time restore the building with techniques they learn. Our
range of activities is wide: drystone, mud and stone building, lime and earth mortars, lime
withwash and pigments, pebble mosaics, tesserae mosaics, stonemasonry, stone carving,
stone lettering. Interns accommodate at the same building and share kitchen and cleaning.Food in not included.
Also take care of the vegetable ecological garden and chicken roost.
The course is strongly focused on project management, guiding the interns in the process of learning how to create or direct a project ( timetable,human resources,logistics, budget, team motivation...)
Previous experience with international programs:
Change Agents UK 2013 and 2014 Leonardo interns: 4 consecutive batches of english interns
receiving sustainable building and permaculture practical instruction. 2-3 months each.

Stone carving is an educational activity of the highest order: planning, design, determination and skill combine harmoniously providing tangible results and a considerable increase in self-esteem.

La talla de letras es una actividad que requiere precisión, delicadeza y cuidadosa planificación. Aprende a conocer
los distintos tipos de letra ( góticas, unciales, romanas, manuscritas...) y a usar correctamente los finos cinceles y
macetas que se precisan.
The carving of letters is an activity that requires precision, delicacy and careful planning. Get to know the different fonts (Gothic, Uncial, Roman, handwriting ...) and properly using fine chisels and mallets.

Construcción bioclimática
y tradicional: Morteros de cal y morteros de tierra / Lime and earth mortars

en hogares sólidos, saludables y bellos. Aprender a trabajar con morteros de tierra y cal abre la puerta a la autoconstrucción o rehabilitación de una vivienda utilizando materiales y recursos locales

A third of humanity lives in houses built with earth, and depending on your technical knowledge and skill, solid, healthy and beautiful homes can be build with simple materials. Learning to work with lime mortars and earth mortars opens the door to self or rehabilitation of housing using local materials and resources.

Construcción bioclimática
y tradicional:Hornos de leña / Wood Ovens
Construir un horno no es solo una iniciación a la construcción sostenible. También es un perfecto ejemplo de la aplicación practica de los conceptos permaculturales: integración holistica de materiales y técnicas constructivas (barro, aislantes, boveda, arco...) cuyo resultado es un sistema que funciona con biomasa local y permite hornear pan y alimentos para autoconsumo o como proyecto de autoempleo.

Pared seca: International Drystone Workshop Deia
Curso de pared seca, que celebramos anualmente en Deiá desde el año 2009. En estos años y en sucesivos talleres, hemos construído un teatro griego al aire libre con capacidad para 60 espectadores.

Tecnología apropiada: Estufas de inercia térmica
Curso de estufas rusas: Diseño y construcción
de una estufa de inercia térmica.Al contrario de las estufas de metal, estas estufas basan su funcionamiento en la capacidad de acumulación térmica que tienen materiales como el barro o la piedra. Se prende un fuego durante una o dos horas y la estufa actua como una batería, acumulando el calor primero, y liberandolo posteriormente durante varias horas.
Russian stoves Course: Design and construction of a thermal inertia masonry stove. Unlike metal stoves, these stoves base their operation on the heat storage capacity with materials like clay or stone. A fire is lit for an hour or two and stove acts as a battery, accumulating heat first and then releasing it for several hours.

Tecnología apropiada: Energia Solar
Curso de energía fotovoltaica y termosolar.
Ventajas e inconvenientes de la corriente continua frente a la corriente alterna. Baterias, cableado, placas policristalinas, monocristalinas, amorfas, reguladores, inversores, onda sinosoidal o de onda modificada, 12, 24 o 36 voltios, autoconsumo o instalación aislada, colectores termosolares de aire o de agua...todo un lio técnico y económico que conviene desenredar antes de tomar la decisión de montar una instalación.
En el curso enseñaremos a construir un colector solar para calentar agua a partir de materiales de reciclaje y montaremos una instalación básica fotovoltaica.

Batteries, cables, polycrystalline, monocrystalline or amorphous panels, regulators, inverters, sinusoidal or modified wave, 12, 24 or 36 volts, self-consumption or isolated installations, air or water solar thermal collectors ... all technical and economic mess worth unravel before deciding to make an installation.
The course teaches you to build a solar collector to heat water from recycled materials and to mount a basic photovoltaic installation.

Los cursos monográficos constan de 10-15 horas
repartidas en 2-3 días laborables o en fín
de semana.
Una vez efectuada la preinscripción y alcanzado
el mínimo de alumnos, se fijan las fechas
y horario del curso de acuerdo con la disponibilidad
horaria que más que mejor se adapte al grupo.
Mínimo 5 alumnos, máximo 10.
- Los cursos incluyen una sólida báse
conceptual y teórica al tiempo que una buena
práctica manual en obra. El objetivo es adquirir/mejorar
las destrezas necesarias para poder emprender proyectos
de autoconstrucción , permacultura y tecnologías
apropiadas.
