"We are what we repeatedly do, excellence then is not an act, but a habit." .
(Aristotle.)

The forging of a Team is not an easy accomplishment. It takes time to find the right combination of passion, dexterity, technical proficiency and students and team coordination skills. Also to develop a solid friendship among all the members of the crew around a common dream. This is why we basically train ourselves to be able to handle different projects at different levels. Flexibility and adaptability are common characteristics, as well as curiosity.

We are proud that despite being a very small organisation, we have been able to build relationships with different experts in the fields of vaults and sustainable building practices. We are one of the few schools in the world where students can learn vaulting techniques.

MIQUEL RAMIS:

Director and founder of Artifex. Coming from a family of stonemasons, Miquel decided to drop his career at an international hotel chain and to return to his roots founding a small project called Blau Rustic. For a couple of years he produced stone pieces for rustic houses and alongside he started a catalogue of traditional building elements, with the intention of showing the clients what was genuine. Soon he realized two things, first, that although he had always been interested in traditional building design, the stone tradition of Mallorca had a depth and a width far bigger than he thought. Second, that the good stonemasons and masons like his father were retiring while the generational relieve was broken. The level of craftsmanship was alarmingly descending day by day.

So he decided to close Blau Rustic to start a new project: Artifexbalear, a place to re-learn the arts of stonemasonry and traditional building. Artifex received the Innovation Prize of the Chamber of Commerce and took off in 2003 as an NGO and was named "of public interest" in 2008. After a decade, it has become a nationwide reference of stone crafts and the small file of images has grown to +10.000 images. The website contains 2.600 web pages and 100 documentaries and videos covering different aspects of the education of building crafts, possibly one of the biggest Crafts Educational projects ever designed.
